TALL ANTIQUE c.1890-1910s PIMA ( PAPAGO ) INDIAN BASKET - STRONG

Description

A CLASSIC and early Pima basket with a very strong design, nice size, and smaller coils. Made of willow and devils claw on a bear grass bundle with a ( PAPAGO ) SQUARE start coiling clockwise. TRADERS SOMETIMES CALL THESE PIMAGOS AS THEY SHARE CHARACTERISTICS OF BOTH THE PIMAS AS WELL AS THEIR PAPAGO NEIGHBORS. NEWER versions are easily distinguished as the Papagos since c.1930s use yucca while the older versions used willow like the Pimas. EXTRA NICE EXAMPLE with a LOW price !

SIZE:  MEASURES APPROX. 8 by 8 3/4 +/- INCHES IN a slightly ovoid form AT THE OPENING. IT HAS GENTLY FLARING SIDES  AND STANDS APPROX.  by 8 1/2 +/- INCHES tall. tGE COIL SIZE IS A BIT FINER THAN MOST PIMAS WE SEE AT APPROX A LITTLE MORE THAN FOUR COILS TO THE INCH. iT HAS APPROX. 10-11 SITCHEWS TO THE RUNNING INCH MEASURED RANDOMELY NEAR THE MID POINT.
CONDITION:  EXCELLENT WITH A NICE WARM ORIGINAL PATINA. THERE ARE A FEW STITCHES MISSING OFF THE RIM COMMENSURATEW WITH IT'S c.1890-1910 AGE.  -
